Official Statement on the Joint Resolution in Response to the President’s Declaration of National Emergency

official statement Feb 26, 2019

This week, members of Congress will vote on a joint resolution to terminate President Trump’s declaration of national emergency that would allow him to reallocate government resources to build a wall on the southern border–a wall that Congress voted not to fund.

Congress must pass this joint resolution in order to fulfill its duty to act as a necessary check on the executive branch of our government. If Congress abdicates its responsibility to oversee our government’s purse strings, whether out of political expediency, misplaced loyalty, or fear of potential political fallout, our entire inspired system of checks and balances will be seriously threatened.

Our elected representatives in Congress must demonstrate political courage and stand together in solidarity to communicate with utmost clarity their unwavering commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law. We encourage every member of Congress, regardless of party affiliation or views on the border wall, to vote with a resounding yes to protect the balance of powers, defend the interests of taxpayers, and avoid setting a dangerous precedent that future presidents on both sides of the aisle could exploit.
