Take Action: October 13, 2017 Ask Congress to pass emergency relief for Hurricane Maria NOW

The situation in Puerto Rico is dire. Americans are experiencing what has been described as a full-blown humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Families are in desperate need of help. Some experts estimate that the damage could cost in the tens of billions of dollars and the recovery could last over a year.

  • Ask your Members of Congress to propose and pass a relief packagefor Americans suffering in crisis now. “The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday approved $36.5 billion in emergency relief for hurricane-hit Puerto Rico and other areas that have suffered recent disasters.”  Now we need to convince our senators to move on this bill quickly when they return next week.  Possible Script: This is [NAME] and I’m a constituent in [ZIP]. We have a humanitarian disaster unfolding in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. I am extremely concerned that aid efforts to have been slow and insufficient.  I urge [Sen____] to immediately pass a Senate version of H.R. 4008 to provide relief funds to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
  • Ask them to waive or repeal the Jones Act entirely, as 10 days of temporary relief is simply not enough for Puerto Ricans to rebuild or even recover from a state of crisis.
  • Join Latinos Unite in supporting the people of Puerto Rico. Their website has a list of charities to which we can donate and another list of places where we can drop donations. They are also creating lists of families in need of sponsorship: “Join us in our #AdoptAFamilyInPRMovement and rest easy knowing we will connect you with a family in need of help during this crisis. You can sign up to send monthly care packages, or sign up to HOST a family in your home. You tell us how you can help and we will match you up with a family in need.”  More information and to sign up here.
