Frequently Asked Questions

Different MWEG roles have different time requirements. You can commit to a few hours a month up to ten hours a week. Aside from some specific meetings or events (which only pertain to some roles), hours are flexible.

Absolutely! MWEG provides training and mentorship to bring all our volunteers up to speed on any necessary technology. We also believe the day-to-day life and leadership experiences of many women as mothers and church/school/community volunteers provide skills that others learn in professional career settings. You are more prepared than you know.

In most cases, no. Some positions may require some specialized skills, but most of our volunteer roles do not require previous experience. You can see current volunteer openings in the volunteer application.

No. MWEG is now much more than a Facebook discussion group, and there is no Facebook requirement to volunteer for most positions. We do coordinate via an online project management system, and volunteers need to be willing to learn and use it.

MWEG is as much about building up and empowering women as it is about advocating for ethical government. We can use your talents regardless of how deeply interested you are in politics. If you care about one of our advocacy areas or are willing to offer your skills in local community building, administrative tasks, technology, or in other roles, you are a good match for MWEG. You can see current volunteer openings in the volunteer application.

MWEG volunteers and leaders live and work in places scattered throughout the U.S. and world. We coordinate using an online project management system called Basecamp, which all volunteers should be prepared to learn and use. We also use Google products, such as Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Calendars. Virtual meetings may be held via Google Meet or Zoom. Training is available for these platforms for volunteers who need it, so you do not need to be an expert user before applying as a volunteer.

No. As per our membership guidelines, you do not need to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as long as you don't mind that most of us are. We welcome all women who are willing to abide by our six principles of peacemaking and who are comfortable belonging to an organization that is guided by faith and informed by the teachings of Jesus Christ and the doctrines of the Church. All volunteers must be members of MWEG.

Yes. MWEG is an organization founded by women, run by women, for women. Men can support our work by becoming Friends of MWEG.

No. MWEG leaders, volunteers, and members live all over the U.S. and world. We need local leaders in specific states to help with chapters and encircling communities, but we also have many roles that are not location specific. We coordinate using an online project management system called Basecamp, which all volunteers should be prepared to learn and use. You can see current volunteer openings in the volunteer application.

While MWEG does have a limited number of part-time paid and contract positions, the positions listed in the volunteer application are unpaid roles.

"Being a member of MWEG was empowering, but being a volunteer raises that to a new level. Volunteering has filled a need in my life to be of service in a bigger way."

Megan

"Volunteering has been a great experience for me. When I volunteered, I didn’t think I had anything of value to contribute. However, I am able to do something that helps the organization run just a little bit smoother, which helps others do their jobs a little bit better, which helps MWEG accomplish its mission. No matter what you feel you bring to the table, there is always something you can do."

Laura

"Everybody is busy. The great thing about MWEG volunteering is that time commitments can be minimal and can often be completed on your schedule. The best part for me is that the work I do is rewarding and has given me valuable relationships with a delightful team of women."

Kira

"Volunteering with MWEG has allowed me to jump right in rather than waiting for the right moment, cause, or when I ‘know enough.’ It allows me to learn from others as we work through issues together with layers of scaffolding and support."

Stacie

MWEG works to ensure volunteers are trained, supervised, and supported so they can be successful and productive in their work as well as ensure that the relationship is beneficial to both the volunteer and organization. MWEG volunteers will go through an informal interview process and are required to participate in up to two hours of initial orientation and training. It is expected that volunteers will maintain consistent communication with their volunteer supervisor about their ability to volunteer on a regular basis. Volunteers serve under the discretion of MWEG's executive directors. No volunteer position is guaranteed.
