Weekly Action Recommendations: Week of July 23, 2017

ACTION: Oppose interference with Special Prosecutor Mueller’s investigation

The Trump team is saber-rattling about special counsel Mueller:  https://apnews.com/c24162eda00e4efd87bcf49493424090/Trump-legal-team-looking-to-investigate-Mueller-aides  and http://thehill.com/policy/national-security/343016-trump-mueller-tensions-escalate  While we can hope that Trump would not be so foolish as to take steps to fire Mueller, we could have hoped the same about his ACTIONs towards Comey. The resistance should be ready to take to the streets if he makes this move. In the meantime, call or write your Members of Congress about Trump’s continued flirting with flouting the rule of law and let them know that if Mueller is fired that we expect them immediately to form an independent investigation and hire Mueller as counsel so that he can finish what he started.

ACTION: Advocate for a path to citizenship

Senators Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin have introduced the Dream Act of 2017, which would bring legal status to immigrants who came to the U.S. at a young age http://bit.ly/2tKjtYz  Call or write your Senators, asking them to cosponsor and support the Dream Act.

ACTION: Oppose corporate detention profits

Call or write your 3 MoCsPossible Script: I am calling about corporate involvement in deportation. A recent report showed some contracted companies run detention centers that violate basic human rights and fail to meet federal standards. ICE’s aggressive tactics are increasing numbers which worsens conditions. Also, deportation charter flights are a cash cow for airlines, and are rife with abuse. I am outraged that my tax dollar is funding corporations that violate human rights, waste money, and are linked with the Trump campaign. I know immigration is a complex issue, but I look to [name] to speak up against unnecessary deportations and hold corporate contractors to the highest standards. What is [name] doing to address aggressive deportation and create a path to citizenship?

ACTION: Oppose the border wall whose site preparations have begun

Call or write your 3 MoCsPossible Script: Hi. I’m calling from [ZIP] and oppose the 2018 budget funding a $2.1 billion border wall. Please don’t let threats of a government shutdown force a compromise on this bad idea. Can I count on [name] not to approve budget funding on this wall?

ACTION: Advocate for fixing ACA instead of repealing.

Call your 2 SenatorsPossible Script: Hi. I am calling because I want good, affordable health care and am tired of watching Republicans fail over and over because they’re not listening to constituents. I want [name] to start fighting for fixing what’s not working in the ACA. I want to see Senate bipartisanship and transparency in this process. Thank you.  Bonus Action: Tweet McConnell: A refresher for @SenateMajLdr: This is how to pass a healthcare bill. #democracy https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DEy5u5nXcAEI5yd.jpg

ACTION: Religious Freedom, Support for our Muslim friends

The Sacramento office of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) was mailed a Koran submerged in lard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0Vz26b2vSs [Islam forbids eating pork.] If you wish to show support, consider sending notes to CAIR at 1122 Del Paso Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95815

ACTION: Support voting access and election integrity – Get local on voting access

Click here and note: whether your state is attempting to restrict voting access. Look up your state legislatorPossible Script: I am concerned about voting access in [state]. Can you tell me what [name] is doing to ensure that voting is fair, free, and open?

ACTION: Support voting access and election integrity – Oppose forcing people pay to vote

Call your House RepresentativePossible Script: Hi. I’m from [ZIP] and concerned about H.R. 2090, requiring all citizens to provide ID before voting. Some Americans can’t afford two hours off work to get to a distant center. This law amounts to a poll tax penalizing the poorest Americans. Can I count on [name] to vote against supposed Election Integrity Act?

ACTION: Support voting access and election integrity – Restore faith in America’s voting system

Call your 3 MoCsPossible Script: Hi. I’m calling with two concerns about voting. First, Russia’s attack on our elections was wrong. I want [name] to act decisively to prevent hacking, changing voter data, and the use of social media bots as we approach the 2018 midterm elections. (pause) Second, The Kobach commission undermines America’s faith in the voting system and still has no stated purpose. Can you tell me what [name] is doing to oppose stricter voting laws and to keep voting fair, free, and open?

ACTION: Support voting access and election integrity – Oppose shutting down international cyber coordination

Call or write your MoCs.  “Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is shutting down an office that coordinates cyber issues with other countries, according to two people familiar with the plan, in a move that critics said will diminish the U.S. voice in confronting hackers.”  Considering what happened to our 2016 elections, this move seems dubious at best.  Let’s also voice our concern to Tillerson:  https://www.usa.gov/federal-agencies/u-s-department-of-state

ACTION: Express gratitude for action against unethical practices

Representative Don Beyer has submitted an amendment to four sections of the House spending bill, disallowing reimbursements to be made for if/when the U.S. Government stays at Trump-owned properties. This would essentially prevent Trump from profiting off of his presidency, as he has still not divested his businesses. Let’s send Rep. Beyer a thank you for taking ACTION against Trump’s unethical practices: 1119 Longworth H.O.B., Washington, DC 20515 and/or (202) 225-4376

ACTION: Thank three Republican senators for putting their foot down on outright repeal of ACA.
