The 5 C’s of Critical Consumption

It's Media Literacy Monday! In this series, we share tips and insights on finding good information and understanding key media literacy skills.

1. Context

  • Where did the reporting or writing take place?

  • When was it produced, and have things changed since then?


2. Credibility

  • Does the source have a reputation for journalistic integrity?

  • Does the article cite its sources, including primary sources?

  • Is this actually satire or an advertisement posing as a news story?


3. Construction

  • Is it clear whether this is opinion or news?

  • What biases are indicated in the article?

  • What information is left out?


4. Corroboration

  • Are other credible news outlets reporting the same information?


5. Comparison

  • What are other credible news sources from across the political spectrum, saying about this subject?


Be a conscious consumer. Think critically about your news.
