The 5 C’s of critical consumption

1. Context

   1. Where did the reporting or writing take place?

   2. When was it produced, and have things changed since then?

2. Credibility

   1. Does the source have a reputation for journalistic integrity?

   2. Does the article cite its sources, including primary sources?

   3. Is this actually satire or an advertisement posing as a news story?

3. Construction

   1. Is it clear whether this is opinion or news?

   2. What biases are indicated in the article?

   3. What information is left out? 

4. Corroboration

   1. Are other credible news outlets reporting the same information?

5. Comparison

   1. What are other credible news sources from across the political spectrum, saying about this subject?

Be a conscious consumer.
