Why does media literacy matter?

Media literacy and peacemaking series: part 1

Media literacy skills can help us:

• analyze media messages

• assess the influence of those media messages

• contribute to the media landscape thoughtfully and responsibly

Consuming news with good media literacy skills can allow us to:

• determine if a story is credible and a news source is trustworthy

• understand the standards of good journalism and choose news sources accordingly

• exercise healthy skepticism and develop good judgment on which stories should be shared
